Progress Report: Week 18

It's been hard to keep up with my goals over the last two months.  I've been feeling depressed and have been having trouble writing and being motivated.  But it's good to check in and make some steps forward no matter how small or few.  The end of the year is coming, and I must look forward to what I can do with some New Year's momentum . . .

1. Finish #52FilmsByWomen challenge (goes until end of 2016)

PROGRESS - I've gotten more behind on this, but I am still chipping away.  I was behind by 3 films and then added 6 more weeks, meaning I should have watched 9 films by now.  I've watched 5 - Miss Julie (didn't like), Adore (found interesting), Absolutely Fabulous The Movie (cute for those who get all the inside jokes), and Black in America Since MLK: and Still I Rise (definitely learned a lot, but felt like some stuff seemed missing) and What Happened Miss Simone (liked! learned a lot here too).

2. Collect the rest of the state quarters I am missing (I am missing Hawaii, Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa) - COMPLETE

PROGRESS A friend of mine send me Hawaii, Michigan, and Iowa, and then someone at work serendipitously found the Nebraska quarter a few days later.

3. Watch these 12 films : The Darjeeling Limited, Wild, Trainspotting, Equity, Carol, Absolutely Fabulous The Movie, 8 1/2, Songs My Brothers Taught Me, Diary of a Teenage Girl, Day for Night, The Fits, Brief Encounter

PROGRESS: Absolutely Fabulous finally became available for digital rental!

4. Read these 4 feminist reads: To the Lighthouse, The Feminine Mystique, The Beauty Myth, Americanah

No Progress

5. Read 3 of these books that I own or have started reading: Shrill, We Were Feminist Once, Savage Grace, Anna Karenina, Lean In

No Progress

6. Visit Lambert Castle in Paterson, NJ

No Progress

7. Get my passport

No Progress

8. Get involved in local alumni film festival or environmental film festival

TINY PROGRESS:  I was emailing back and forth with a film festival and was about to meet with them, when I realized they had confused me with someone else.  Once I cleared that up, they stopped being so responsive.  So who know what will come of this.

9. Finish off another student loan COMPLETE

I only have one small loan left, so I want to pay that off this week.  I just need to find time to call them during business hours.

10. Start to learn to play the drums

No Progress

11. Complete a serious outline for a screenplay

No Progress

12. Write a song

13. Move  COMPLETE

28 Things: Progress Report Week 12

Boy, have I had trouble keeping up with these progress reports!  It is a sign that I've forgotten about my goals.  Between never-ending upheaval at work, trying to stay on top of school work, and feeling depressed and exhausted by the world I've bumped off track a little bit.

1. Finish #52FilmsByWomen challenge (goes until end of 2016)

PROGRESS - I'm still behind on this, I really want to catch up.  I really enjoyed working on this challenge last (calendar year)!  I need to stop watching junk and focus on checking out some lady directors again.  I should have watched 6 films by women since the last report.  I've watched two: Pelican Dreams and The Lifeguard.  I enjoyed both.  At the time I watched Pelican Dreams I was really depressed about the state of the planet and I was hoping that the film would cheer me up and although it really wasn't a depressing film it didn't make me feel any better.  I also watched the final cut of the documentary film about women's education I've been working on which was directed by June Cross . . .  I've got 3 films to catch up on! . . . I also watched The Girl on the Train, which I really liked and felt like it was directed by a woman but it wasn't HOWEVER it was shot by a woman (who also did Far from the Madding Crowd)!

2. Collect the rest of the state quarters I am missing (I am missing Hawaii, Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa)

No Progress

No Progress

4. Read these 4 feminist reads: To the Lighthouse, The Feminine Mystique, The Beauty Myth, Americanah

PROGRESS:  I finished Americanah!  I really really liked it a lot!

5. Read 3 of these books that I own or have started reading: Shrill, We Were Feminist Once, Savage Grace, Anna Karenina, Lean In

No Progress

6. Visit Lambert Castle in Paterson, NJ

No Progress

7. Get my passport

No Progress

8. Get involved in local alumni film festival or environmental film festival

TINY PROGRESS:  I emailed the local environmental film festival about getting involved, but I've yet to hear back.

9. Finish off another student loan

COMPLETE!  I completed this on a bit of whim!  Originally planning on pay this off in January, I got frustrated trying to sort out a technicality and just paid it off three months early! Surprise!  Now I just have one loan left and it is not very large, I plan on ridding myself of that one very soon as well!

10. Start to learn to play the drums

No Progress
Next Step - Find the drum sticks in the garage

11. Complete a serious outline for a screenplay

2. Collect the rest of the state quarters I am missing (I am missing Hawaii, Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa)

28 Things: Progress Report Week 5

I decided that I did not like that format I tried out on my last progress report, so I'm going back to the old format.

Also, I feel like I say this all the time, but September has been a bit crazy and tumultuous!  Lots of changes and drama happening at work, plus I moved, started class again for the semester, and am finishing up work on a documentary project that will finish in October.  I haven't been really consciously focusing on my goals for the last several week!  And I have been watching The Office and Penny Dreadful too much on Netflix.

1. Finish #52FilmsByWomen challenge (goes until end of 2016)

PROGRESS - I have sadly fallen behind on this again!  I have watched only one film that I know of that was directed by a woman since Week 2 - Trudell, a documentary about Native American activist, John Turdell who was very active in the American Indian Movement and became a well-known poet.  I still have to catch up on two films though!

2. Collect the rest of the state quarters I am missing (I am missing Hawaii, Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa)

No Progress

No Progress

4. Read these 4 feminist reads: To the Lighthouse, The Feminine Mystique, The Beauty Myth, Americanah

TINY PROGRESS - I got Americanah on audiobook!

5. Read 3 of these books that I own or have started reading: Shrill, We Were Feminist Once, Savage Grace, Anna Karenina, Lean In

28 Things Progress Report: Week 2

Two weeks into a new year of goals!  Let's see how I've done.  I feel like I haven't yet been as focused on this list as I'd like to be.  I am experimenting with a different format . . .

PROGRESS!

1. Finish #52FilmsByWomen challenge (goes until end of 2016)

I fell behind for one week so that means I had to watch 3 things.  So I watched Songs My Brothers Taught Me, which I was very excited to learn had just come onto netflix!  Then last week I watched a unexpectedly gripping documentary called Secret Daughter, by a director with whom I am currently working on a documentary project.  Then finally I also watched several short films by Yulin Kuang, namely her wonderful Tiny Feminists films.

I was very lucky to be able to accomplish 2 goals at once by watching Songs My Brothers Taught Me. I hope to watch The Fits very soon.

4. Read these 4 feminist reads: To the Lighthouse, The Feminine Mystique, The Beauty Myth, Americanah

I have The Feminine Mystique on audiobook and have listened to a few hours of it.  It is very interesting, and also very white woman-centric so far.

5. Read 3 of these books that I own or have started reading: Shrill, We Were Feminist Once, Savage Grace, Anna Karenina, Lean In

I am technically now approximately 6 pages into We Were Feminist Once, so that counts!

13. Move

I sort of started out ahead on this one as in very early August I found an apartment!  I will basically be moving in very very soon.  So this week I am starting packing, purchasing a few things I need (like lamps, shower curtain), and getting renters insurance sorted.

24. Start a short, daily journal

I found the perfect journal for this.  It is a five-year journal with only a few lines for each day.  It works really well because there isn't pressure to write loads, but rather the perfect amount of space to jot down the major things that happened that day.  I've gotten 1-2 days behind a few times but so far I have been able to record something for each day.

28 Things Before 29

29!  That number is a bit scary!  It's a reminder that 30 is coming so soon!  There are so many thing I want to get off and running before 30! Luckily, the good news is that I am not there yet!  I'm not even at 29 yet.  So this year is an important year to keep making progress.

Here are my goals for this new year:
  1. Finish #52FilmsByWomen challenge (goes until end of 2016)
  2. Collect the rest of the state quarters I am missing (I am missing Hawaii, Nebraska, Michigan, and Iowa)

Progress Report: Final for Year 27

In a few hours it will be time to stop working on this list, and look forward to a new set of goals and a new year (even if some of those goals look suspiciously familiar).  So I shall take one final stock of what I managed to accomplish in the last 12-month!

I was discussing this list with a friend last month and I remarked that even though I never get through all or even most of these goals each year, I always get through more than I would have if I hadn't set these down and taken a stab at it.  This year I completed half (technical 51.6%) of my goals--- which is an improvement on last year!

I'm looking forward to setting some new challenges for myself in year 28 and trying to follow my new(ish) mantras:
  • Do What You Want---- not in the selfish, 'F the world' sense, but in an unapologetic, 'You have permission,' 'You can do it' 'go for it' way.
  • Dreams Come True (if you make them)
Once again, to help me accomplish goals and make progress, I still need to make some of these goals more tangible, perhaps breaking larger aspirations into parts and tackling each at a time.

I also just finished reading a biography of Jim Henson, who is a big inspiration to me, and I've been reflecting on a piece of wisdom Henson left his children in his will:"It's a good life, enjoy it."  (483)
I think this is important, to live life with joy and appreciation more--- I am, despite my idealism and romanticism, definitely one for anger, resentment, bitterness, holding grudges, complaining, and blaming my dissatisfaction on cruel negligence of 'the universe/fate'.  I think I should make more of an attempt to enjoy my life, and to expect my world to allow me to do that as well.

In another section of the book, Henson is quoted speaking about his morning meditation rituals.  While I do not have plans for taking up yoga or meditation anytime soon, I can't help but feel I can learn something from Henson's example once again:
As part of my prayers, I thank whoever is helping me---I'm sure somebody or something is--- I express gratitude for all my blessings and I try to forgive the people that I'm feeling negative toward.  I try hard not to judge anyone, and I try to bless everyone who is part of my life, particularly anyone with whom I am having any problems." (459)
After his death, friend and colleague, Richard Hunt, would say of Henson "He wasn't a saint, but he was a close as human beings get to it."  (490)

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

Progress Report: Week 46

I can't believe there is basically only one month left!  There are definitely a few of these that I can knock off in that time if I put my mind to it!

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - COMPLETED

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - No Progress
I have a really simple idea for this, but it just requires to me to get my hands on a camera, find some peace and quiet, and do it!

5.  Make an anthology of my Grandma's poems & writings - PROGRESS
I written up a compilation of all the poems that I've got and circulated it to a few other people for feedback regarding the order, and to check for typos, which turned out to be really important because there were many more mistakes than I expected!  Now I need to get back to their feedback to see what I think.

6.  Read 5 of these intellectual/feminist books: The Second Sex, Lean In, To the Lighthouse, The Beauty Myth, Reverence to Rape, Sister Outsider, How to Be a Woman, Americanah - TINY PROGRESS
I haven't made progress on To the Lighthouse, but I started listening to the Feminist Mystique on audiobook which I think should count towards this goal even though it's not one of the books.

7.  Learn to do a Tarot reading - PROGRESS
I still am very new to all of this, but I've started trying to do a few readings for myself.  I am still very unfamiliar with the means of the cards and have to use a reference book but it's progress.  I have started trying to incorporate the minor arcana, whereas previously I've only been using the major arcana.

Some light & quirky film reviews

A few weeks ago I went on a bit of a movie binge, and watched a bunch of light, enjoyable films.  I’ve got a huge list of movies (and shows) to watch but I haven’t had the energy/emotional-strength to watch the heavier ones.  I’m fast running out of films that are fun or relaxing, especially since I just plowed through these five.

God Help the Girl
After waiting for this movie to come out for years, and then forgetting to actually watch it when it became available, I FINALLY watch this movie.  I think I rented it on Amazon.  I greatly enjoyed it.  It is not anywhere near the most original story--- depressed British girl deals with her emotions through music, makes hipster friends, struggles with whether or not/how to pursue a career in music.  It was a very hipster movie, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it!  It is a musical which I really enjoyed; I liked the hipster pop music.  The lead actors were good.  The fashion and style of the film was fun.  Despite being about a girl with emotional/mental health problems, it was a film that had a great spirit of fun and taking joy in the simple things like quirky outfits, dancing to pop music etc.  It was infectious.  I bought the soundtrack and danced around the house.  I would definitely watch this again/host a sing-a-long.

The Holiday (Netflix btw)
This was a rom com I was always curious to watch (not sure why, because there are British people in it?) but never have.  I think I was avoiding it because I was dubious that this film could convince me that there was a world in which Kate Winslet and Jack Black were a couple . . . I wouldn’t say that it convinced me, but I was ok with it the effort it made.  And ok with the idea that it presented a relationship that maybe is or isn’t supposed to play out as true love after the credits roll.  I got a kick out of this film.  It had more to it than just ‘two beautiful women swap houses, hijinks ensue!’ I really enjoyed Iris’ story arc, and was pleasantly surprised by a lovely b-plot involving Eli Wallach.  The relationship between Wallach’s character and Iris was way more beautiful than either of the romantic storylines this film was trying to cook-up.  And also, why did I have a problem with Jack Black?  He was a pleasure to watch in this film; he and Winslet did a great job building a relationship between their characters--- I would just say their chemistry was one more of friendship than of romance.  Generally though, Diaz and Winslet’s acting was not their best in this film—Diaz because her acting was just not good (I do NOT buy this person as a successful trailer editor), Winslet because I think she was a little too good for this role; neither of their characters necessarily had that much depth but I was just hard to watch Winslet’s performance and believe that she could lack depth. Jude Law on the other had was alarmingly charming as hell in this movie.  This movie was 100% a rom com, but it left me feeling warm and fuzzy and like I had seen something with a bit of meaning to it, rather than a mindless formula.  I think I will make an effort to watch this at Christmastime from now on.  Also, fun bonus: Rufus Sewell is in this, playing Iris’s charming, egocentric, hilariously oblivious (or is he?) ex.

For the following three films, one thing I have learned is that there is some mysterious force that takes perfectly good, little films and gives them ridiculous, cheesy titles.

Progress Report: Week 42

I knew that the last month had gotten away from me a bit, but I hadn't realized for how long!  Life in April got crazy busy, and then went right into May continuing to be crazy busy!  When will it end? I have not been doing good about checking in with my goals, which is disappointing because this is the exact time I should be buckling down and trying to finish goals before August.  I don't have much time left.  I don't think I will be able to finish all my goals, but I would like to complete as many as I can!  In this report, I'm going to see which goals I should consider completed, and which I want to focus on trying to accomplish.

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - COMPLETE
This is complete as I took 2 semesters of a hiphop dance class.

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - TINY PROGRESS
I was all set to actually make very simple short interview-style video, but life intervened and I ended up having to push it back . . . which led to me not doing it yet!  I also have another idea that would be even simpler!  I want to try doing this sometime in June, if not earlier!

5.  Make an anthology of my Grandma's poems & writings - No Progress
I haven't gotten back to this lately!

Progress Report: Week 35

Work and life have been a little stressful and too busy.  April is going to be a very full month.  I've been feeling a little bit disconnected from my goals during the last two weeks, doing things very haphazardly, although I know have been making progress on some things.  I've been trying to do things related to my goals when I have free time or downtime, rather than just vegging for hours.

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - PROGRESS
This upcoming week is my last hip hop class, so this goal will be complete soon!  I don't know if I'll keep taking this particular hip hop class because it is very late in the evening and I am often very tired.  However, I have been happy with how much my dancing has improved.  I am still very bad compared to all the other students in the class, but I have been able to follow and get the whole routine by the end of class, and also sometimes forget trying to do everything perfectly and to just enjoy myself!

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - TINY PROGRESS
I have a zillion ideas for short films, but there are two I am working on that should be very simple.  I'm hoping to be able to take action on them this month and/or next month.

Progress Report: Week 33

While I'm still as busy as last month, I have found lately that I have been disappointed with my progress not from lack of time, but rather due to lack in initiative.  I feel like I have been slacking off lately.  I realize that I need to now account for 'free' time--- time to relax and watch TV, read a book or magazine, or similar . . . because I will do these things either way.  But I also need to be mindful of working on my goals throughout the week.  I've fallen into the habit of thinking I will catch up on all my goals on the weekend.  Of course when the weekend comes around there is never enough time to do everything!  Last week I made a point to try to accomplish some things earlier in the week!  This made me feel great!  I felt productive and it also alleviated some of the pressure on my free time on Friday night through Sunday!

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

Progress Report: Week 29

My MA program has taken up a lot of my time this month.  I have felt like I haven't had time for a lot of my personal projects because I have been spending a lot of time doing research and reading for my program.  I have been feeling a little demoralized about it.  Also I scheduled a few too many social activities for this month I think (but they were all worth it!).  I hope I get get back on track with at least a few things.  Let's see how I did . . .

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - PROGRESS
I have been going to my hip hop class for a 3-4 weeks now.  I am still pretty terrible, but I have improved so much!  I pretty much have been able to follow the routines for the last two classes!

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - No progress.
This is something I really want to get back on track with.

Progress Report: Week 26

It's been one month into the new year.  I've been trying to stay focused on accomplishing my goals.  I think I've been doing better at some, I'd like to keep doing better but it's important to acknowledge work well done too.

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - TINY PROGRESS
I signed up for another hiphop dance class.  First class it today!

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - TINY PROGRESS
I have so many ideas for short films all of a sudden.  A few are really simple, a few more complicated.  I have a script that I'd like to produce.  I also bought a book on producing to help me think about how to approach this . . . but of course this is just triggering a million more questions I want to ask people for advice.

5.  Make an anthology of my Grandma's poems & writings - TINY PROGRESS
I have made a comprehensive list of all the poems I have.  I need to start thinking about ordering them, synchronizing a few that I have multiple versions of, and deciding what to do with a few that seem unfinished.

6.  Read 5 of these intellectual/feminist books: The Second Sex, Lean In, To the Light House, The Beauty Myth, Reverence to Rape, Sister Outsider, How to Be a Woman, Americanah - No Progress

7.  Learn to do a Tarot reading - TINY PROGRESS
In January I was trying to practice every day but it ended up being more like a few times a week.

Progress Report: Week 24

Two weeks into the New Year!  I have been using my new workbooks and steadily getting things done so far.  I don't always get the things done on the day I schedule them, but they get done within a few days usually.  Let's see how they measure up with my 27 goals (I decided on the 27th goal!).

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - No Progress
I forgot about this.  I'll have to work on that this week!

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

Progress Report: Week 22

It's New Years! I thought I'd better check in with my goals and see how I'm doing so that I can get planning for the brand new year.  I got two planning workbooks from friends this year to help me stay on top of goals and track my progress.  Funnily, until I started working with them these last two weeks, I didn't occur to me to actually schedule deadlines, benchmarks etc for my goals into the literal calendar . . . but now that these books have suggested it, it seems like a great next step to make these things a reality!  Time to get down to planning . . .

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) - No Progress
I am going to try to sign up for another dance class for the spring since I missed so much of my dance class in the fall.
