Progress Report: Week 20

It's been a long time since I've updated this.  The longer I was away from looking at this list, the more nervous I was about looking at it---- because I knew I'd see how little I'd done to move towards these goals.  But the New Year is approaching and it seems like a good time to renew resolutions.

In November, I tried to do NaNoWriMo.  I only made it about 9 days.  It was really difficult.  But it was an interesting learning experience.  I think the word count per day was too large for me to handle.  To make the word count I need about 3 hours a day for writing, and it was too exhausting for me.  I couldn't keep it up for a full month.  Traveling also got in the way.

Progress Report: Week 7

I definitely fell behind with these reports, but mostly because I've been a busy bee!  I don't think my busy bee-ness has necessarily translated to goal progress but let's see shall we . . .?

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) PROGRESS!
I waited until the middle of the week to do this report precisely so I could brag about going to my first hip hop dance class!  I signed up and then missed the first three classes because of bad planning on my part, but literally today I had my first class!  I was not very good at it, but I definitely like the style and was surprised how much I improved in just one class.  But it was a little intimidating that everyone else was catching onto the routines much faster than me.  Just gotta take it as a reminder to focus on me and my improvement!  Happily the class is actually being taught by the same instructor as my Balletone class so it was much less scary to start the class (and start it late) with an instructor I had taking a class with before.

3.  Find a new doctor - No Progress

4.  Make a short film - No Progress

5.  Make an anthology of my Grandma's poems & writings - No Progress

6.  Read 5 of these intellectual/feminist books: The Second Sex, Lean In, To the Light House, The Beauty Myth, Reverence to Rape, Sister Outsider, How to Be a Woman, Americanah - No Progress

7.  Learn to do a Tarot reading - No Progress

8.  Read 4 of these unfinished reads --- Story of B, Ode Less Traveled, Anna Karenina, Jim Henson: The Biography, Snobs by Julian Fellows, Bird Cloud by Annie Proulx, Savage Beauty (biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay) - PROGRESS!
I'm slowly making my way through Bird Cloud.  It's not a super fast read.  And I also stupidly started another book that is a much faster read and it is tempting to just keep reading that one all the time.  Also I've been a bit tired to get through too many pages in the evening (when I usually read).

9.  Watch these 15 movies:  Noah, Rush, The Apartment, Maleficent, Sweetie by Jane Campion, Hateship Loveship, Easy Rider, Dirty Dancing, Maidentrip, Laggies, Dear White People, Frida, Saving Mr. Banks, Carousel, Across the Universe - PROGRESS!
I watched Dear White People because I got really excited that it was on Netflix and watched it immediately.  I really liked it, but I think some of it when over my head.  I kinda want to watch it again!

10.  Watch these 10 British movies/miniseries: The Riot Club, God Help the Girl, Pride, Calvary, Nowhere Boy, Birdsong, Parade's End, Archipelago, The Selfish Giant, Orlando - No Progress

As with #9, I've got to look up which of these are one Netflix.

11.  Plan speaker series on digital activism for work - No Progress

12.  Put together a collection of poetry & get one poem published - No Progress

13.  Finish writing a film script - No Progress

14.  Pay off another of my student loans - No Progress

15.  Create postcards with art or photos from family members or friends - No Progress

16.  Make scrapbook for 2015 - No Progress

17.  Keep blogging & Write a post for a professional blog - No Progress

18.  Go to 3 film festivals - No Progress

19.  Learn more about car maintenance - No Progress

20.  Do more music stuff - PROGRESS!
I have been playing the piano 2-3 time a week and I am learning two new songs.  They are not terribly difficult but I like them a lot, and one of them is a key that I don't usually play in which is a challenge for me.

21.  Learn to use a sewing machine - No Progress

22.  Minor financial task I've been putting off - No Progress

23.  Do a freelance/volunteer video project - No Progress

24.  Write an essay on Snow White & the Huntsman - No Progress

25.  Make decent New Year's Eve plans (while still mainly avoiding drunk people) - No Progress

26.  Get my elbow sorted out (it hurts frequently) - No Progress

27.  TBD - No Progress

Bonus Goals
  • Make postcards from my photos - No Progress
  • Get something tailored - No Progress
  • Buy a new laptop - No Progress
  • Take PR classes - No Progress
Progress on 4/27 (0 Bonus Goals)

Progress Report: Week 3

Here we are three weeks in already!  I have got to get cracking on these!  I don't think I've made too much progress on any of these.  But let's see . . .

1. Get passport & travel to Canada - No Progress

2. Take a dance class (not ballet) PROGRESS!
I signed up for a hiphop dance class!  Starts this upcoming week.  I'm pretty nervous about it, but also excited!

I need to finish Beauty Myth! I find it very interesting but it is hard to read quickly.

7.  Learn to do a Tarot reading - No Progress
I need to buy a book to learn from so I don't have to keep checking the same one out of the library over and over again and getting fines!

8.  Read 4 of these unfinished reads --- Story of B, Ode Less Traveled, Anna Karenina, Jim Henson: The Biography, Snobs by Julian Fellows, Bird Cloud by Annie Proulx, Savage Beauty (biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay) - PROGRESS!
I finished Snobs!  Didn't enjoy it as much as I expected.  And I'm about 60 pages into Bird Cloud.

9.  Watch these 15 movies:  Noah, Rush, The Apartment, Maleficent, Sweetie by Jane Campion, Hateship Loveship, Easy Rider, Dirty Dancing, Maidentrip, Laggies, Dear White People, Frida, Saving Mr. Banks, Carousel, Across the Universe - No Progress

10.  Watch these 10 British movies/miniseries: The Riot Club, God Help the Girl, Pride, Calvary, Nowhere Boy, Birdsong, Parade's End, Archipelago, The Selfish Giant, Orlando - No Progress

11.  Plan speaker series on digital activism for work - No Progress

12.  Put together a collection of poetry & get one poem published - No Progress

19.  Learn more about car maintenance - No Progress

20.  Do more music stuff - PROGRESS!
I played the piano once every week so far.

21.  Learn to use a sewing machine - No Progress
My mother said that she would get me sewing lessons, but we need to sort out when this will happen.

  • Buy a new laptop - No Progress
  • Take PR classes - No Progress
Progress on 3/27 (0 Bonus Goals)

Style Inspiration: Kono from Hawaii Five-0

I have been watching CBS's reboot of Hawaii Five-0 on Netflix.  It's a fun, charming show, sometimes funny, sometimes sappy sad, often times shooty-shooty-beat-em-up, with a healthy side of car chase.

While all of this is going on  Officer Kalakaua rocks some kickass, cool printed skinny jeans, boots, and loose fitting tanks and blouses, and some fierce rings--- when she isn't toting her bullet-proof vest and sniper riffle.  I am definitely envying her work-place ready uniform!

27 Things Before 28

Official goals for year 27!  Some of these are spill overs from what I didn't get done last year, some of them are brand new!  I wasn't able to come up with something super specific for every single thing, but I hope to make them more S.M.A.R.T as I go along.  I've also found at the end of the year last year that have a deadline made it a lot easier to remember to get things done and stay motivated.  I am going to see if I can plan a little better this year to maybe set some benchmarks earlier in the year, making it easier to work through things in the winter and avoid piling things up for the summer.

Final Report: Week 48 of Year 26

Overall, I feel like I didn't accomplish as much as I should have.  It seems like (as with the year before) I ignored my goals during about half the year (late winter & spring).  Looking back it's incredible that I didn't do some of these things.  It is amazing how much I let fear and avoidance of hard work or difficulty get in my way.  I don't want to live like that.  I will fight on to overcome these things, as I'm sure all of us do and will continue to do.

But as much as I see the distances I didn't travel,  I definitely wouldn't have traveled as far if I hadn't set these goals!  And this new year is another year to try to do better and do more!

Here is one final tally of what I think accomplished:

1.  Get a new job and move. - NOT ACCOMPLISHED
Still need to do: Application to PR program - I got approval to take these courses.  All I have to do is set aside an hour or two to do the application.

2.  Make my own postcards. - NOT ACCOMPLISHED

3.  Write a script - NOT ACCOMPLISHED

4. Publish a poem - NOT ACCOMPLISHED

5. Track my spending/budget - COMPLETED
I was able to set up a budget (with some help and advice) and with this information I now know more about my spending habits and can make more conscious choices of how to spend and save my money!

6. Apply for a passport - NOT ACCOMPLISHED

7.  Get new glasses **COMPLETED WEEK 8**

8.  Visit Canada - NOT ACCOMPLISHED
While not accomplishing #6 definitely got in the way of traveling, so did other things.  Sometimes the timing does not work out for some travel plans.

Progress Report: Week 43-46

I am pretty close to being done with my year (only two weeks left pretty much).  It has been pretty tempting to just give up and call it a day with these.  BUT I'm trying really hard not to do that because there are still things that I can definitely do in two weeks!

1.  Get a new job and move. No progress.
STEP 4 Do application to PR program

2.  Make my own postcards. No progress
STEP 1: identify 5 photos I would like to use on the cards
STEP 3: decide on the size of the card
STEP 4: design the template for the back of the card
STEP 5: choose a printer or buy paper to print on my own

3.  Write a script No progress.

4. Publish a poem No progress
STEP 3: identify some places where I would like to submit a poem and qualify
STEP 4: select some poems for submission and fine tune them

5. Track my spending/budget **TINY PROGRESS**
I haven't finished tracking my expenses from the past 4 months.  BUT I did got through this massive hoard to receipts I've been holding onto for some crazy reason and got rid of 99% of them all!  This will make organizing my incoming receipts much easier.

And this weekend I will finished tracking my expenses!!!

STEP 5: choose a printer or buy paper to print on my own

Progress Report: Week 38-41

It's getting down to the wire, and I still have a lot to accomplish.  Obviously I don't expect to get through everything in the next 1.5 months, but I'm hoping I can at least make progress on everything.

1.  Get a new job and move. No progress.
Still haven't done the PR application.  I really need to do this.  It's amazing how many things just get in the way. I have been pretty busy at work this past month.  I've also decided to stay on at my job until the end of the year, so I'm going to dial back the job searching until the late fall.

STEP 4 Do application to PR program

2.  Make my own postcards. **TINY PROGRESS**
I've started tinkering around with Photoshop, so I can probably design the cards on that.

STEP 1: identify 5 photos I would like to use on the cards
STEP 3: decide on the size of the card
STEP 4: design the template for the back of the card
STEP 5: choose a printer or buy paper to print on my own

Progress Report: Week 36-37

I feel very positive about this stuff this week.  I think it is because I made some progress on a couple things I have been avoiding, but I let a bunch of things fall to the wayside.  I could have easily done much more.

1.  Get a new job and move. No progress.
Need to stop procrastinating and do the PR program application!

STEP 4 Do application to PR program
STEP 5: Look for apartment
STEP 5 Keep job searching
STEP 6 keep thinking about what I want to be doing in the next 5 years

2.  Make my own postcards. No progress
STEP 1: identify 5 photos I would like to use on the cards
STEP 3: decide on software to use to to design my card (using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Lightroom) especially the back side
STEP 4:  Design the template for the back of the card.

Progress Report: Week 30-35

I'm a little bit freaked out because the time is dwindling before August!  I am going to get back to my once and week posting to keep myself on track

1.  Get a new job and move. **TINY PROGRESS**
There are some things developing at work, so I am thinking about perhaps staying on another year, or at least until 2016 so I can see some major projects through.  Instead, I am thinking about moving later this summer.

I'm hoping to do my PR program application this week, so I can be ready for the course that starts in June.  May was an insanely busy month a work, plus I am taking on more responsibilities, so I did not get around to doing it.

STEP 4 Do application to PR program
STEP 5: Look for apartment
STEP 5 Keep job searching
STEP 6 keep thinking about what I want to be doing in the next 5 years

2.  Make my own postcards. No progress
I think I might check out what vendors can do for me instead of designing the card myself.

STEP 1: identify 5 photos I would like to use on the cards
STEP 3: decide on software to use to to design my card (using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Lightroom) especially the back side
STEP 4:  Design the template for the back of the card.

3.  Write a script **TINY PROGRESS**
I have slowly started working on my script again.

Met Gala, Fashion Heaven

Met Gala buzz is dying down, so before we completely forget about it and all its fashion glory, I would take this opportunity to catalog my favorites and other opinions.  Hopefully I get all these links correct.

Clear Winners:

You can see Vogue's official best dressed list, a few of which I disagree with but that's life.

Absolute, Jaw-Dropping Favorites

Men with Great Taste

(There was some FANTASTIC men's fashion going on.)

Progress Report: Week 26-29

So I fell off the band-wagon hard with this, and then I got afraid to go back, and made it worse.  But it's a new month.  Spring is really here.  Time to get back on track.

1.  Get a new job and move. No progress.
I haven't done any more applications in a while, but I am doing a volunteer production coordinator thing which hasn't been too much work and has been good experience.
I haven't applied to the PR program at work yet, but I did work out the payment plan.

Projects at work have been going well, better than I expected actually and so far I have been doing a pretty good job managing them.  This are going to really heat up in about 2 weeks so we'll see if I can keep up.

STEP 2  Apply!!!
STEP 3  follow up with PR program to sign up for courses
STEP 4 Do application to PR program
STEP 5 keep job searching
STEP 6 keep thinking about what I want to be doing in the next 5 years

2.  Make my own postcards. No progress

What I Gave Up for Lent

For Lent I decided to give up fashion shopping.  I am interested in fashion for fun, as an artistic/creative project, and as a means of cultural subversion.  It is something like a hobby for me, and I like to come up with creative, unique outfits.  I like to keep an eye on trends, certain brands I like, and street style.  I think on average, I probably buy something new approximately every month, usually online.  I'm trying to buy more and more second hand because it is more sustainable, and you can often find more unique and/or better quality items than in a chain or fast fashion store.

However, recently, I had come to realize that (1) I needed to save more money and (2) I felt like I was becoming ruled by shopping and always needing to buy something to feel like I was being 'current' and on top of developing my style and being a true practicing 'fashionista.'

When something starts to feel like it is controlling you instead of you controlling it, or stops feeling like fun, and begins interfering with your life and your sense of happiness, it's time to reexamine your relationship with that activity and change your habits.

I felt like this was appropriate to give up for Lent because I think our culture of consumerism and materialism is wrong and morally unhealthy.  Being interested in fashion can be a fraught hobby regarding this.  I felt like I was getting away from the positive, underlying things I liked about fashion and sinking into the negative and selfish ones.  Pope Francis asked us to fast from indifference to others this Lent;  and I felt like I could be more appreciative of the people in the fashion world, of myself, and of all the blessings in my life and become more in tune with how my actions were contributing to negative forces in our world if I were to fast from fashion.

Here are some of the things I observed so far:

Progress Report: Week 24 & 25

Wow, I really fell off the blogging bandwagon these past few weeks!  All of February I had some seriously lousy times and got the blues really bad.  For a few weeks I've been having a little bit of trouble sleeping (which is death for me) and headaches, which pretty much means STRESS!!!!  It makes it really hard for me to think, concentrate, and write.

I definitely felt a change this past weekend.  The weather got a tiny bit better.  The sun shone on me. I spent some time writing.  I remembered that there are things to look forward to.  I was more determined to be productive this weekend.  And although I wasn't as productive as I wanted to be and did some unplanned Walking Dead watching, I still got more stuff done than I have in the past couple of weekends.

I'm about half way though the year, and I still have a lot to accomplish!  Gotta stay focused!

1.  Get a new job and move. **TINY PROGRESS**

Progress Report: Week 23

I got a little more proactive towards the end of the week, but still not as productive on the weekend as I had hoped.  I have gotten hooked on the show Num3ers and am actually finding it really inspiring . . . I have only about 10 more episodes left.  It's really easy to just keep watching episodes instead of facing a list of things I want to do and making a decision about which to do.  I have to face the fact that finishing Num3ers within a week is not really a goal I want to prioritize.

Also winter is really getting to me; after having a pretty lousy past two weeks, and encountered a few more things over the weekend and this week that show that the lousiness persists--- all while being cold--- it's been hard to stay positive and proactive and determined.  But the only way forward is to make progress, even if that progress is TINY PROGRESS.  I keep telling myself: Why do tomorrow, what you could do today?

1.  Get a new job and move. **TINY PROGRESS**

Looks I Love from Topshop Unique FW15

Topshop Unique presented their Fall/Winter collection today.  Here are some of the looks that particularly caught my eye:

I love prints, and this quirky floral is no exception.

Goals: Focus for Week 23

Identifying specific focus areas didn't really help the last time I did this, but I thought I would give it another go.  I find it is really easy to decided to keep watching one more episode of something on Netflix or revisit my Pinterest feed one more time, when the specific things I wanted to accomplish are not forefront in my mind.  And then suddenly, I find myself at the end of the week not having done any of the things I wanted to that week and was completely capable of having done.

There are only 4 more day of this week left (including today) so I want to refocus myself and prove to myself that I can been more responsible and dedicated to what I say I want.   I'd also like to make event tiny progress on some of the goals I have accomplished very little on or mostly ignored.

Progress Report: Week 22

I am not even sure what happened last week.  Much of the same insanity and depression from the previous week continued, and apathy and self-pity still got me.

1.  Get a new job and move.  No progress.
I haven't done job searching I intended to last week or applied to the PR program through work.

STEP 1  Go through my job notification emails that I've been ignoring, and see if there is anything I want to apply to
STEP 2  Apply!!!
STEP 3  follow up with PR program to sign up for courses
STEP 4 keep job searching

Progress Report: Week 21

Ok so this past week, work SUPER killed me.  I had to deal with one of the most maddening projects I've ever encountered whilst relocating my whole team and most of our equipment to different offices because of a (well 7, actually) ceiling leaks.  I was working extra hours, arguing with maintenance men who rarely let me finish a sentence, and just wanting it all to end.  So I spent a lot of my free time wallowing and drugging myself with Netflix.  On top of that I got sick on Friday (probably because of stress, mold in the ceiling at work, and fluctuating temperatures).  So I really didn't make progress on a lot of stuff I intended to this week.  However at one point (probably on Friday) it did occur to me that the best revenge (on work?  the fates?) would be to be productive in what free time I did have--- so hopefully as work continues to slowly kill me I can remember this to keep myself from spending too much time in vegging self-pity.

1.  Get a new job and move.  No progress.
I haven't made time to do more job searching or to apply to the PR program through work.

Goals: Focus for Week 21

I thought it might be helpful to identify a few goals that I want to focus on this week.  Perhaps it will help me get things done!

1.  Get a new job and move.
Get at least one application done, and check on my Idealist and LinkedIn suggestions.

11.  Take a fitness class.
Get my gym pass!

16.  Keep to a blogging schedule.
I'd really like to accomplish this this week.

17.  Help a friend make her film a reality.
I really really need to read the script again and send my thoughts.

18.  Start learning a little web design.
I would like to spend at least 1 hour making some progress in my Code Academy lessons.

23.  Watch these 10 classic movies that I have never seen.
I want to at least get my hands on one of the remaining movies so I can make some progress through this.

25.  Complete some family projects.
I should be able to look through the wedding photos and the scrapbook notes.

Progress Report: Week 20

Wow, work has left me feeling so drained.  A lot going on at work and a lot of silly frustration.  Plus, the weather has been especially wintery making driving (commuting) lousy.  Lately, I've just felt like totally vegging and working on anything in my spare time.  Also, I planned something for this weekend that didn't go great so that left me feeling a bit unambitious.

1.  Get a new job and move.  No progress.
I have found a few more jobs I should apply to.  I also have a couple places where I've got do to some searches.  I also have been so busy that I forgot to follow up on signing up for that PR program.

STEP 1 do application
STEP 2  keep job searching
STEP 3  follow up with PR program to sign up for courses

2.  Make my own postcards. **TINY PROGRESS**
I didn't get back to toying with software yet, but I did get a new SD card reader for my computer.  My computer wasn't reading any SD cards, so on the advice of a friend I got a USB card reader and now I am able to get my photos off my SD cards much easier!

STEP 1: do some MORE research on the cost of ordering some cards.
STEP 2: identify 5 photos I would like to use on the cards
STEP 3: look into how to design my card (using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or Lightroom)

Progress Report: Week 19

I have been feeling quite drained lately between a lot of activity at work and the cold weather.  I was trying more consciously this week to work on some of those goals that have not gotten a lot of attention, while keeping up with what I have been making steady progress on.  I definitely was planning to make more progress on certain things, but I ended up having to spend time shoveling show and helping a family member with something.  Plus when you get to the weekend, despite all my big plans I always end up wanting to just sleep or brainlessly relax.  Although I know there is merit in doing that and giving your brain (and body) as rest, it is precisely this time that I was to repurpose towards things that I want to achieve.  Let's see how I did, this week.

1.  Get a new job and move.  **TINY PROGRESS**
I've found another job I want to apply to.  I'm still struggling to pin down a precise job type that I want; I'm keeping a somewhat open mind and am hoping to find something that excites me.  I also talked to my boss and she agreed to pay for some online PR/marketing classes for me as part of my professional development!

STEP 1 do application
STEP 2  keep job searching
STEP 3  follow up with PR program to sign up for courses

2.  Make my own postcards. **TINY PROGRESS**
I spent some time investigating what software I might want to use to accomplish this.  I have some ideas now and am going to do some trials to see if I'm able to accomplish what I want.

Golden Globes 2015, Yawnsville Fashion

I found this year's Golden Globe awards to be much more boring than ever before.  The show ran long which means we likely lost a lot of funny material from the hosts.  There were some great feminist moments, but otherwise things were pretty dull.

Most dull of all was the fashion!  Usually one can rely on that to at least keep things interesting.  In my opinion, everyone wore things that were appropriate for the occasion but nearly none of them were fun, interesting, stunning, edgy, creative, or daring.

Best Dressed

Sienna was hands down the best-dressed of the evening.  She may have even been the only person whose dress I looked at twice.  Her presentation was late into the show, but I'm glad someone finally brought the fashion!

Progress Report: Week 18

I feel like I actively tried to work on this stuff a little more than last week, but that might just be my imagination.  I started to not feel so great over the weekend.  I think work has been tiring me out at lot, plus PMS, plus the winter.  I hoping I feel better this week and can get back to work.

1.  Get a new job and move.  No progress.
Haven't done any more applications this week.  Haven't really found any more jobs that I'm interested.  I'm torn between want to work in a job related to the environment and in media production.  I think I'm subconsciously holding out for something that marries the two but I don't think that's the best approach if my goal is just to get out without taking a step backwards.
I also want to talk to my boss about getting some professional development so I can develop some more PR and marketing skills.

Progress Report: Week 17

I'm still not getting a on top of some of this stuff as I should.  Laziness is getting me.  I thought I did better than I have.

1.  Get a new job and move.  No progress.
